An Important Lesson: The Change of Domino Sugars Neon Sign
One of Baltimore’s brightest lights has finished its historical missions on March 1 and will remain light out for the coming four months before the new sign coming in. Domino Sugar Baltimore announced last month that they planned to replace the giant “Domino Sugars” neon sign. The neon sign has been on since 1951 and has served as an icon for the locals in Baltimore. The company stated that the 70 year-old sign “has lit the Baltimore skyline as an icon to locals, a beacon to travelers, an inspiration to artists and a symbol our refinery is thriving” when announcing the change.
The New LED Sign
According to sources, Domino is investing in “a large-scale, sustainable renovation of the sign” to ensure “it stays lit for generations to come” as they are getting to “100 years of operation in Baltimore”
“We will be making structural repairs and installing new letters and a border that include state-of-the-art LED (Light Emitting Diode) lighting that will mimic the look of neon. We are going to great lengths to ensure the sign retains the same appearance, is more sustainable, stays fully lit and is built to last at least another 70 years.”
The new LED sign that will “mimic” the look of neon is designed to be more energy efficient which can save 33,000 Kilowatt hours and 23 tons of carbon dioxide each year. Meanwhile, the $2 million project will ensure it stay being one of the largest illuminated signs within the country. The new sign will be 70 feet by 120 feet while the letters will be kept as 12 to 20 feet tall using aluminum instead of steel. The flexible tubing LED will then make the sign brighter.
Since the Domino refinery in Brooklyn, New York, was demolished several years ago, Baltimore has the biggest Domino plant within the country. The sign change follows the disappearance of other neon signs round the city, including the blue neon wave on the south end of the National Aquarium in Baltimore, also replaced by an LED sign.
